Utility Model

A utility model is an intellectual property right to protect inventions. It is very similar to the patent, but usually has a shorter term and less stringent patentability requirements. Terms such as “petty patent”, “innovation patent”, “minor patent”, and “small patent” may also be considered to fall within the definition of “utility model”.

Even though the protection promised to utility models is so broad (as broad as patents) the registration procedure is so simple and facile. No examination, no search, no inventive step. The only requirement for registering a utility model is novelty and being applicable in industry.
